Western Australia's largest battery storage system begins installation

Electric vehicle and energy storage industry company New HOrizons Ahead (NHOA) has begun the installation of a 100MW/200MWh battery storage system based on lithium iron phosphate batteries in Western Australia.

The Western Australian government said on August 5 that the first energy storage unit had been installed and the rest would take two months to complete.

In October last year, state-owned energy producer and marketer Synergy awarded NHOA the EPC contract for the project, which is located in the Kwinana area south of Perth.

This system will participate in load shifting, absorbing power from rooftop PV when there is excess generation, and discharging it during peak periods.

The Western Australian government is also planning to deploy 1100MW of new energy storage as part of the A$3.8 billion ($2.6 billion) new renewable energy infrastructure plan announced in June.

Premier Mark McGowan said: "I would like to thank NHOA for their confidence and investment in Western Australia with their regional headquarters in Perth and I recently visited their headquarters to thank them for their support."

Energy Minister Bill Johnston said: "This battery storage project will be the size of a football field and a half and will be integrated into the Western grid, and Synergy is also building a battery management system to optimise battery performance and longevity."
